Abi Castillo
BIO
Vigo. She holds a degree in Fine Arts and specialised in artistic ceramics at EMAO (Escola Municipal de Artes e Oficios). She works from a small studio in a rural village in Galicia.
Her practice spans painting, illustration, and, above all, ceramic sculpture, giving form and volume to creatures and characters. Her work maintains a romantic ideal of a fantastical natural world, like a private garden that conceals something and plays with ambiguity. Each piece carries the essence of a self-portrait—a natural, animated, and gentle being, surrounded by elements that envelop it as a form of protection. This ambivalence between mysticism and drama, between the monstrous and the beautiful, runs throughout her practice: a protective shell around a fleshy, soft interior.
She has presented solo exhibitions such as LIGHT PRESERVER (Joymachine Gallery, Chicago, 2025) and DRAMA (Ó! Galería Cerámica, Porto, 2021), and has participated in Hybrid Art Fair and JustMad. In 2019, she received First Prize at the Novos Valores competition (Pontevedra) and collaborated with Inditex on Zara’s international Women in Art project. She was selected for the 10th International Ceramics Biennial of Talavera and the Aveiro Ceramics Biennial (2021). She also illustrates books for Galician publishers such as Xerais and Galaxia.
